About this diagnostic

A quick, honest look at why this tool exists and who it is for.

The Study Leak Diagnostic is a free, five-minute reflection tool that helps students and parents work out where study effort is leaking away. Instead of vague advice like "study harder", it asks twenty-five practical questions across five common study leaks — fake studying, weak retrieval, screen and reward leakage, poor planning, and confidence wobbles before exams. When you finish, you get a clear profile: your most likely leak, what it actually means, why working harder may not fix it, and one small repair step you can start today. Everything runs in your browser, no account is needed, and your answers are never stored on a server.

The tool is for high-school learners who feel their marks don't match their effort, and for parents who watch long study sessions produce disappointing results and want a place to start — not another lecture. It is deliberately simple and honest: it is a reflection aid, not a medical, psychological, or formal academic assessment.

It was created by Lourens Breytenbach, an educator and the author of the Smart Study System. It is part of that wider programme of practical tools, worksheets, and guides that help students replace guesswork with a system.
